The Location Sound Bible Book Review

I just finished reading The Location Sound Bible, written by Ric Viers.  So, what did I think. I have read a lot of books on filmmaking over the years many I liked and more that I didn't. I am happy to say that The Location Sound Bible fits nicely into the few that I call indispensable. I am a long time advocate of focusing on great sound over imagery. When I started making films It did not take me long to learn this lesson. Low budget filmmakers tend to focus on the image, myself included. I found that no matter how skilled they are behind the camera if you don't have good sound films, always come across as amateurish. Neglecting to capturing great sound is the hallmark of the amateur filmmaker. If you want to stand above the crowd of mediocre online videos you need to focus on Story, Sound, Images.

I looked for years for A book that could answer all my questions about production sound. I finally found The Location Sound Bible and ordered it right away.  Ric handles the material in a systematic well thought out way. The book is easy to read with a good mix of technical information, real world knowledge and humor. The book covers the techniques and everyday ins and outs of the profession of location sound. Whether you are a one man band, working on Electronic news gathering, electronic field production or capturing location sound for a film this book is for you.

I stumbled around for years gathering tidbits of information on location sound. It was a long slow process with many mistakes along the way. This book is what I needed when I started many years ago. Lucky for you, you can save time and a ton of money by not buying the wrong equipment or losing jobs because you don't understand how the business works. Do yourself a favor read this book, you won't regret it.
